What satellites are genuinely good at
Detecting change over time at scale. Vegetation trend, canopy loss, bare soil, burn scars, standing water — these are observable and consistent across thousands of plots at a cost no field team can match. For land-use change and for spotting anomalies, remote sensing is unmatched.
Where it gets weaker
Smallholder plot sizes approach or fall below usable resolution. Mixed cropping confuses classification. Shade-grown systems hide the crop under canopy. Monsoon cloud cover removes months of observation. Practice-level claims — how much nitrogen was applied, when irrigation stopped — are simply not observable from orbit.
The productive combination
Use satellite signals to score every plot for risk and implausibility, then send the field team to the highest-scoring ones. This turns a fixed field budget into a targeted verification programme, raising confidence per rupee spent far more than random sampling.
Say what you measured
Every verified claim should state its evidence type: remotely observed, field verified, or farmer reported. Auditors do not object to farmer-reported data. They object to farmer-reported data presented as verified.
