Scope 3 Emissions in Agriculture: A Practical Guide for Food Processors and FMCG Companies

Category 1 purchased goods is where 80–90% of a food company’s footprint sits, and where the data is worst. Here is how to fix it in the right order.

Why agriculture breaks Scope 3

For a food processor or FMCG business, own operations are a rounding error against the emissions embedded in what is bought. Those emissions occur on thousands of farms the company has never mapped, in processes nobody recorded, using inputs nobody logged. So the number gets estimated — and an estimate that responds to purchase price rather than farming practice cannot guide a reduction programme.

The fifteen categories, and the three that matter

Most food businesses can concentrate on three: category 1 purchased goods and services, which is agriculture; category 4 upstream transport; and category 12 end-of-life treatment of sold products where packaging dominates. Categories 2, 3, 5 through 11 and 13 through 15 usually contribute little and should not consume the programme’s first year.

What primary agricultural activity data means

Area cultivated and yield. Fertiliser type, rate and application method — nitrogen dominates. Irrigation energy source and hours. Machinery passes and fuel. Residue management, because burning is a significant and highly visible source. Farmyard manure and organic amendments. Field-to-collection transport distance and mode. Then processing energy and cold chain duration downstream. Each maps to a versioned emission factor from a cited source.

Sequencing the transition

Start where volume and regulatory exposure intersect: your largest commodity in your most scrutinised market. Run primary and spend-based estimates in parallel for one full cycle so you can explain the restatement to your board and assurer before it lands in a public report. Then extend commodity by commodity rather than attempting the whole supplier base at once.

Expect the number to move — plan the narrative

Primary data frequently raises the reported figure, because proxy factors often understate nitrogen application and residue burning in smallholder systems. A restated, defensible baseline is a far stronger position than a flattering estimate that cannot survive assurance. Prepare that explanation before publication, not after a journalist asks.

Turning the inventory into reduction

A measured inventory makes hotspots visible at node level: which region, which practice, which processing step. Nitrogen use efficiency, irrigation pump energy, residue management and cold chain duration are typically where intensity per tonne actually falls. Reduction targets set against measured hotspots are credible; targets set against estimated totals are aspirational.
